Wedding favours are one of those lovely touches which can be a great addition to your special day. They are nice way to thank your guests for their attendance and can really add a personal touch. However, it can be hotly debated whether you actually need them or if they are a wasted cost. Often, they get left behind by guests because they just aren’t practical or something that can easily be transported home. If you are planning to include favours, we’ve got a list of dos and don’ts to consider to make sure all of the effort you put into them doesn’t go to waste.
DO – MAKE THEM PERSONAL
Wedding favours are a way which you can add a personal touch to your day. Rather than opting for something completely generic which doesn’t particularly represent you as a couple, use your favours as a way to showcase your personalities and interests or highlight your love story. Did you get engaged in Italy? Opt for little bottles of limoncello. Do you holiday in France every year? Treat your guests to a mini box of macarons.
You can also make your favours personal to your guests. A small keepsake with their name or initial is a great choice, such as a compact mirror or a keyring. Give them something you know they’ll love and include a small bag of their favourite sweets or a mini bottle of their preferred spirit.
DON’T – MAKE THEM TOO BIG
One of the main reasons why favours get left behind is because they are simply too big! Usually, your favours will be placed on the table settings at the wedding breakfast, so when that’s concluded, your guests need to be able to easily put them in a bag or pocket. Otherwise, they can easily get lost during the evening reception, especially if your venue clears some of the tables to make way for the dance floor.
DO – CONSIDER THE SEASON YOU’RE GETTING MARRIED
When it comes to choosing your wedding favours, you should consider the season you are getting married in. If you’re getting married in the middle of summer, we are sure your guests would appreciate a fan or some sunglasses as a wedding favour. If you’re opting for a winter wedding, why not treat your guests to a little hot chocolate kit which they can make when they get home.
DO – MAKE THEM EDIBLE
If in doubt, opt for something edible that your guests can consume on the day! Whether it’s a bag of sweets, a cake pop or a personalised biscuit, they will always go down well after the meal and saves the issue of guests having to transport them home.
DO – MAKE THEM YOURSELF
Everyone loves something which is homemade! It really shows that you have gone that extra mile to gift your guests with something personal which you have put time and effort into. Mini jars of homemade jam, little bottles of gin which you have flavoured yourself, or hand poured candles or wax melts are always great choices.
DO – CONSIDER A CHARITY DONATION
In recent years, many couples have opted to give a donation to charity in lieu of favours. Instead of spending the money on favours which your guests may not particularly want, you can make a charitable donation and know that the funds are being used for a good cause. It’s also a way to highlight a charity which means something to you and your family and incorporate them into your special day. Many charities will give you a pin which you can give to your guests to let them know you have opted to donate the money which you would have spent on favours.
